As a researcher, university lecturer and designer, Dr. Anders Warell has worked in the area of product experience since the late 1990s. After completing his PhD in 2002, he has worked as Assistant Professor in Industrial Design Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, and as Associate Professor in Industrial Design at Massey University School of Design in New Zealand.
In 2005, Dr. Warell initiated and developed Affect, the Centre for Affective Design Research and was inaugural Research Director from 2005-2008. In collaboration with research colleagues, the Centre was awarded major governmental research funding in 2006, the largest grant awarded for design research in New Zealand, focusing on Design for Desirability in New Zealand manufacturing industry. In 2002, Dr. Warell was the co-founder of Nordcode, the Nordic Network for Communicative Design Research, which is now an internationally established and governmentally funded network for design research, with annual seminars and doctoral courses.
Dr. Warell’s research area includes product experience, product aesthetics, design semantics, product identity, product form design, conceptual design, and design strategy. Through the development of methods, tools and approaches for design, the aim of the research is to increase the understanding of how products are perceived, interpreted and appreciated and how design work can be directed to achieve desired experiences in users, customers and the market. In his research, Dr. Warell has collaborated with companies such as Volvo Car Corporation, Volvo Technology, Volvo Truck Corporation, Saab Automobile, Electrolux, Fisher and Paykel Whiteware, Macpac Outdoor Equipment, Gallagher Animal Management, 4RF Radio Communications, and Skope Industries. He has published his research at conferences and in research journals internationally.
