On the 10th and 11th of November 2008 Affect - the centre for affective design research hosted a workshop: Industrial Competitiveness through Design for Desirability at Massey University in Wellington. The workshop was opened by Dr Mark Goellner who spoke on the background of Design for Desirability. Mike Jensen of Fisher and Paykel presented Izona - Desirable Kitchen Appliances, a case study of the Fisher and Paykel award winning Izona product range. This talk was open to the public. A great deal of discussion about subtlety of design understanding in response to the human condition was generated.
Subsequently, Rodney Adank introduced tools for sampling subjective sensory experiences with products; Sensory Snapshot and Sensory Sampling - an immersion approach to focus the attention of design teams on sensory experience. These approaches to sensory experience and product design were applied to a range of products including: iPods, pruners, packs and perambulators. Designs and concepts were presented at the end of the second day of the workshop.
