Surplus and Creativity 2010: Kinder, softer, sweeter

The 2009 Surplus and Creativity: Design and the Readymade competition aimed to stimulate affiliates of Affect to engage in a playful and creative way with the concept of the readymade.

Its success encouraged us to consider making the competition a regular part of our events calendar, and to open it to external entrants.

In 2010 we are pleased to see entries from staff, students and alumni of Massey University, and external organisations associated with the College of Creative Arts at Massey University.

RevIvory Brush by Bronwyn Holloway-Smith

This year's brief was to transform surplus or discarded products so that their impact on the world is less serious - bringing them into a new being that is kinder, softer, and sweeter:

  • Kinder on the environment, reducing the waste stream by recycling through reuse
  • Softer on materials, reinvesting embodied energy to redeem and reinvigorate discarded surplus objects
  • Sweeter solutions that delight, inspire and meaningfully contribute to the experience of everyday life

The exhibited entries show evidence of thought and consideration, respect and understanding of what the objects previously were.

Although not every element of the brief is represented in each entry, each addresses at least one of the themes with wit, humour and feeling. Whether it is the visceral reaction provoked by the RevIvory Brush; the deeply felt sentiment expressed by My Little Pony; the satisfying way that Humdrum brings objects together in a way that just fits; or the designerly elegance of Ventilite, these pieces all draw on our understanding of their past life in evoking our appraisal of them as objects of meaning today.
